What've you been up to lately?

I just watched Wu Chun and Calvin Chen on local telly perform the theme of Romantic Princess. Yes. Just the two of them. They actually performed during a break in this singing tilt Pinoy Dream Academy.

And bite me now, but the scholars of the singing tilt sang waaaay better than these two. *shields self from Fahrenheit fans* WHAT?! I think Jiro's talented! Will that do?

I kinda adore Calvin's British accent. Yeah.

And they shared the stage with Billy Crawford. Hmm. Not perform, but just talking.

Just came from watching WANTED at the cinema for the second time. And this time, I ACTUALLY managed to watch, as in watch it. Because the first time last weekend was with a couple of friends I haven't seen for a while, and had they mentioned they wanted to catch up with stuff about RL, I might have dissuaded them from going into the cinema. So basically, the first time, I had half my mind on the movie, and the other half on them asking so many things, 'catching up'.

The best thing about this film (aside from the car chase scene and the curving bullet shots) would be the transformation of James McAvoy's character, Wesley Gibson, from an 'ordinary' and 'pathetic' account manager to a super assassin for The Fraternity, a thousand-year-old brotherhood whose targets and lofty aims are all based on the Loom of Fate.

Angelina Jolie was a big draw for this film. But she's not really the star, no. She's mainly the support role, and WHAT A STRONG SUPPORT she provides. I was never a huge fan of hers, but I liked her here. She was strong without being flashy, imposing without being intimidating.

You know that line about there not being small and big roles? Morgan Freeman is the embodiment of that. I swear, give ANY role to this guy and he'll pull it off nicely.

This was not without twists and revelations. After all, any film involving clandestine brotherhoods and secret operations are bound to have skeletons in the closet. But that one moment of clarity, that one scene where one line was delivered that completely changed everything for Wesley, that was a powerful scene for me. And simply watching the play of emotions of James' face is a joy. Him totally shedding off his Scottish burr for an American accent was an added plus for this film.

He's such a wonderful actor. I was not wrong to pull for him since I saw him in Band of Brothers (what a small role!) and Inside I'm Dancing...followed by a string of carefully picked roles (Narnia's Mr. Thomas, anyone?)....He should've gotten a nomination for Atonement. Oh well.

Damn. I saw THIS

"There's no way that they could do the sequels without James. It'll be the biggest pay-day of his career."

Ditto.

A tidbit. The last scene, when the camera pans close to cubicle where 'Wesley' sat in front of the computer with his back to the audience....See that name plate at the side of the cubicle? It was written J.G. MILLAR.

It was some sort of homage to the creators of the comic book miniseries this movie was adapted from. Mark Millar and J.G. Jones. Cool, eh?

And yet another flailing for me, LOTR-freak that I am. I know James keeps denying rumors that he will play Bilbo Baggins, but OMIGOD, if he does, I'm one happy preciouuussss!!! Or he may not do it. That's fine with me. AS LONG as he plays Beren IN CASE The Silmarillion is adapted to film. Yes. I can wait.

A~nd...I rambled. Forgive me.

Bilbo Baggins?! really?

[identity profile] dvampyrlestat.livejournal.com 2008-07-13 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
REALLY!!??

But he keeps denying it! And talk is that maybe BECAUSE he wasn't approached more formally just yet.

dang. PJ ought to get a move on.

I was impressed by James McAvoy's performance, and I will usually watch anything with Morgan Freeman in it.

Plus Angelina Jolie as a sinuously tattooed assassin chick is just always a bonus :D

Ugh you make me wanna marathon LOTR Trilogy tonight >_> but I need my sleep...badly x_X

[identity profile] dvampyrlestat.livejournal.com 2008-07-13 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman share one thing I admire in actors. Versatility. They totally own the screen when they appear.

And I am actually glad they did not play up a love angle between Fox and Wesley. It would've ruined the entire film for me. :)

*pats scattie-chan* There, there. Go to sleep. Middle-earth won't go away while you're sleeping. ;)

[identity profile] indayze.livejournal.com 2008-07-13 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I have yet to see James McAvoy in action. D:
Should I watch him in Wanted first or something else?

[identity profile] dvampyrlestat.livejournal.com 2008-07-13 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
hmm...tough one.

you might want to try with his earlier stuff. Wimbledon was so-so, so ignore that. :)

Atonement is a must-see. If you can get a hand on INSIDE I'M DANCING, that's cool, too. He was offbeat there.

But you did see the first Narnia film, right? he was Mr. Thomas there, the kids' first-ever friend in Narnia.

[identity profile] indayze.livejournal.com 2008-07-13 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Atonement.. I'm so afraid to watch that movie for the sadness. :(
But with so many people raving about it, it can't be that bad..

But when you mentioned the Narnia movie, my jaw dropped because it IS him, just from memory!
I remember going on and on about how Mr. Thomas looked like my friend. XD
(Unfortunately, not James McAvoy himself)

My. Heart. Broken.

Angelina Jolie sucks :D

*hands salve for your heart*

Well. They looked reeealll good, though. Yes.

gawd. The night the two appeared on the show was the Duets night, and this was the only one i can find on YT uploaded. Maybe the uploaders are still asleep.

But anyhow, just to give you an idea of how they sounded (kinda anticlimactic, to hear these singers, then Wu Chun and Calvin NOT sing seriously. oh boy. As I said, thank heavens, they looked realllllly goo~d.) And my top two favorites even ended up singing a duet, too....arrgh....

http://youtube.com/watch?v=X4NqHaU4-go

fantastic voices.

Lolz. Yeah. Haha. Not a fan either. :D

EDIT:Oof! Found clips of the two's appearance!!! Sucky vid qualities, though....cam with TV? bleh.

And it seems the full show's clips, too:

I think Jiro's talented!
i think so too...
i only know Jiro before.. lol.. then wu chun, then this Calvin.. only because he is here.. lol...

[identity profile] muchingching.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
would you forgive me if i told you that finally i looked at your profile and saw that your name is jennifer when all the while i thought jeffer stands for jefferson and i thought you were a male?

ah, wu chun's finally here! my sister has to wake up at 3pm yesterday just to watch ASAP, i asked her, "what? you're watching sarah geronimo's birthday bash?" but then she's all after anyway those 2 guys' short performance. then she went back to bed again. and the female host who talked to them, is that nikki gil or i don't know, does she need to emphasize that girls all over asia (sg, hk, tw, etc.) flew to manila just to catch them here? i didn't know foreigners could boost our country's tourism. that way.

[identity profile] dvampyrlestat.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
you're forgiven. Don't worry. That happens real often, too. ;) Blame that on the proliferation of Jennifers everywhere, so someone truncated the name, and it stuck. ;)

that girl who mentioned it was Anne Curtis. (WHAT?! I ALSO TUNED IN?!) Err. No. I was doing some timing stuff and my PC was like, beside the telly, and my cousin was watching. A big Sarah fan, so there.

And I also wanted to see how they interacted on TV. Typical. Lolz. Like, their lines were fed to them. I mean...HOW MANY OTHER FOREIGN ARTISTS WHO HAPPENED TO COME TO OUR SHORES SAID THOSE VERY SAME THINGS, EH? XDD

And the mention of foreign fans flocking in....I refuse to comment on the grounds that it might incriminate me. :) Tee-hee. *aims for Taipei*

[identity profile] muchingching.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
i really had no idea. and i was afraid of you because i never met or knew of any Arashi fanboi online. have you?

i can't help it either. my room's too dark for me to so found myself beside the TV. and i believe Sunday is family day. my father needs to see at least my shadow every once in a while.

good luck meeting Arashi on Taipei. or witnessing their faces on big big screen LIVE.

[identity profile] dvampyrlestat.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
OMG. I scared you? LOLZ.

Same here. Never met a fanboy online. XDD

Well it's good to keep ourselves updated once in a while, even though it's the last thing we really want. :)

And yes,oh yes, thanks for the good luck. I need all hte luck I can get just to acquire those elusive tickets!!!

[identity profile] muchingching.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
somehow, yeah ;) it's just that I'm easily scared of people.

oh yeah, i followed your advice to see the news sometimes, and they always make me feel really bad. i watch not because i wanted to but because it's there. and i'm get reminded of you.. (is that jeffer watching the news?) although it's different now, coz i knew you're a girl.

[identity profile] dvampyrlestat.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
*pats* There, there. Don't worry. I am so harmless to the point of boring. :)

I watch the news, every night. But most of the time I have half an ear for it, except when there's something really big enough to catch my attention.

As I said, it's good to be aware sometimes...no matter how painful they get. :)
